Former India spinner Murali Kartik feels India\u2019s new Test captain Shubman Gill lacked authority in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Gill had a tough beginning to his Test captaincy career as India lost the match even after scoring 835 runs across two innings. England chased down the massive target of 371 batting last and won the match by five wickets.<\/p>\n
Assessing Gill\u2019s leadership after India\u2019s loss<\/strong>, Murali Kartik said that the 25-year-old lacked authority as captain as he had several players in his ear. He felt that there were too many captains controlling things in the middle, which shouldn\u2019t have happened, as there\u2019s only one captain.<\/p>\n“We can look for excuses but the problem is that we scored 835 runs, one bowler picked up five wickets and despite that India lost the game by five wickets. I felt as if there were too many captains. I could not understand that. Sometimes KL Rahul was suggesting things, Rishabh Pant was suggesting things, Shubman Gill was doing it too, who is the actual appointed captain. I could not understand these signals being made. There is one captain,” Kartik said on Cricbuzz.<\/p>\n
“I understand that if a senior player sees someone out of the place once or twice they make suggestions but it kept happening again and again ,which is not a good sign,” he added.<\/p>\n
Following India\u2019s loss, several pundits have gone after Gill saying that he didn\u2019t have a leader\u2019s aura in the middle<\/strong> and let England control things with his defensive tactics. However, on the batting front, Gill had a good match as he scored a brilliant 147 in the first innings, becoming the fifth Indian skipper to score a century on captaincy debut.<\/p>\nHe got involved in crucial partnerships with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant in the first innings, helping India post a good score of 471. Meanwhile, having lost the first Test from a dominating position, captain Gill will have to lift his team\u2019s morale as India prepare to make a comeback in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, beginning from July 2.<\/p>\n
