The redness is the result, scientifically, of iron oxide\u2002\u2014 rust that coats the surface of Mars. Yet images of the surface produced by robotic probes\u2002have shown a more subtle spectrum. Much of the terrain appears more like dusty tan or rusty brown. Even the poles defy the planet&#8217;s nickname, presenting as bright white due to water ice and frozen carbon dioxide that expand and contract with seasonal sunlight.<\/p>\n<h2>Mars Is Not Just Red: Telescopes Reveal a Complex Palette of Colors, Ice Caps, and Hidden Features<\/h2>\n<p>As per a recent article <a class=\"sp_lnk2\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/is-mars-really-red-a-physicist-explains-the-planets-reddish-hue-and-why-it-looks-different-to-some-telescopes-256398\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> by The Conversation and republished on Space.com, the iron-rich minerals of <a class=\"sp_lnk2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gadgets360.com\/tags\/mars\">Mars<\/a> have rusted, which is why it looks rusty. Like how iron and oxygen give blood its colour, Martian dust also rusts naturally. The <a class=\"sp_lnk2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gadgets360.com\/tags\/polar\">polar<\/a> caps, which are composed of\u2002frozen water and carbon dioxide and have a clearly different colour, are generally white. The sunshine prompts the layer of dry ice to\u2002sublimate and refreeze, making these caps expand and contract with the seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Images taken by previous missions and rovers reveal Mars&#8217;s palette, but\u2002<a class=\"sp_lnk2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gadgets360.com\/tags\/telescopes\">telescopes<\/a> and <a class=\"sp_lnk2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gadgets360.com\/tags\/spacecraft\">spacecraft<\/a> equipped with <a class=\"sp_lnk2\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/resource\/maven-spacecraft-stuns-with-ultraviolet-views-of-red-planet\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">ultraviolet<\/a> and infrared cameras capture false colour images, leading to some confusion about the true colour of Mars.<\/p>\n<p>Spectral\u2002observations, infrared and ultraviolet images, and the broader array of the electromagnetic spectrum are assisting scientists in investigate Mars&#8217; appearance, history, composition and potential past habitability.<\/p>\n<p>Mars might still look red in the sky, but its actual narrative is rather more\u2002complex.
