Ireland all-rounder Curtis Campher made cricketing history on Thursday, becoming the first male professional cricketer to take five wickets in five consecutive deliveries. The remarkable achievement came during Munster Reds’ emphatic win over North-West Warriors in the Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy at Pembroke Cricket Club in Sandymount, Dublin.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old Munster Reds captain produced a stunning spell that saw the Warriors collapse from 87 for 5 to 88 all out in just 13.3 overs, chasing a target of 189. Campher, bowling right-arm medium pace, returned exceptional figures of 5 for 16 from just 2.3 overs.<\/p>\n

His historic run began with the penultimate ball of the 12th over, when he clean-bowled Jared Wilson with a sharp inswinger. He followed it up with a delivery that trapped Graham Hume lbw. Returning in the 14th over, Campher completed a hat-trick by dismissing Andy McBrine with the first ball. He then proceeded to remove Robbie Millar and Josh Wilson with the next two deliveries, sealing five wickets in five balls – an unprecedented feat in men’s cricket.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the moment, Campher said:<\/p>\n

“Because of the change of overs, I wasn’t really sure what was happening. I just kind of stuck to my guns and kept it really simple – and luckily, it sort of came off.”<\/p>\n

Though he is the first man to achieve the feat in professional cricket, Campher is not the first cricketer overall. That distinction belongs to Zimbabwe Women’s all-rounder Kelis Ndhlovu, who claimed five wickets in five balls for Zimbabwe U-19 against Eagles Women in a domestic T20 match in 2024.<\/p>\n

Campher is no stranger to producing magical moments on the field. He previously took four wickets in four balls for Ireland against the Netherlands during the 2021 T20 World Cup – joining a select group of bowlers to have done so at international level.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the match, Munster Reds posted a competitive 188 for 7 from their 20 overs after electing to bat. Campher’s record-breaking spell then ensured the total was never seriously challenged.<\/p>\n

Since making his debut for Ireland in 2020, Campher has played seven Tests, 43 ODIs, and 61 T20Is, and his latest feat cements his place among Ireland’s most impactful cricketers.<\/p>\n
